Breakfast Smoothies
I bought a NutriBullet Pro several months ago, and it quickly became my favorite kitchen appliance. I have always loved juicing and smoothies -- both easy and delicious ways get all your fruits and veggies. But juicing is expensive and there is a lot of discarded waste (unless you want Juice Pulp Burgers for the rest of your life). Before the NutriBullet, I was making smoothies in a regular blender that left greens a chewable size, which was like a half drink / half salad. Gross.
But the NutriBullet changed the game. If you are looking for a way to get fresh, raw fruits and vegetables prepared deliciously in mere minutes, I highly recommend buying one of these things. Btw, I am not being paid to write this post -- although I would LOVE it if NutriBullet wanted to give me some money. I just genuinely love this machine and don't want to spend $750 on a Vitamix.
The NutriBullet is a super high-powered blender that can completely break down food into minuscule pieces. This means that there are no more chewable greens, and that you can add nuts and whole seeds to a drink, and they will be broken down so you get the nutritional benefits (for example, flax seed, which I add to every smoothie).
I honestly feel better after having one of these drinks -- I am energized and alert. The first month I started drinking smoothies (almost) daily, I lost at least 6 pounds (and have kept it off). It is just great to start a day with a beverage that has at least four servings of fruits and vegetables, plus nuts, seeds and healthy fats. Below are some of my favorite ingredients and recipes:
This is my go-to recipe:
- 1/2 frozen organic banana (if you like a really sweet drink, put in a whole banana, or add apple)
- 1 c. frozen organic berries (Target has the cheapest I've been able to find)
- 1/4 organic avocado
- 1 c. organic spinach
- 1 c. organic kale
- 1 tbsp. organic chia seeds
- 1 tbsp organic flax seeds
- 5-6 organic walnut halves
- fill NutriBullet cup with filtered water until all ingredients are covered
- blend 30-45 seconds
- drink. enjoy!
This smoothie has roughly 400 calories and is loaded with vitamins, minerals and healthy fats.
For a greener smoothie, I will just have banana, flax, chia and then cram as many cups of kale and spinach as I can into the blender and give it a whirl -- the banana sweetens it up and its a great way to get your greens!
