Back from the Island
I just returned home from a trip up to the cabin, and it's always amazing to see how quickly things change up there. I had been up a couple of weeks ago for my birthday, but the blueberries were barely growing, the water was still very cold, and the plants were still that bright yellow/green of spring. Now, the blueberry bushes are bursting with berries, some of them ripe enough to eat. The water was warm. We had giant summer storms, and the forest was lush with deep greens.
My nephew, who is turning two next week, came up to visit as well, and what an absolute joy it was to be there with him. Now that he is talking, it's just so fun to listen to his reactions, and talk to him about the experiences. He adored picking blueberries and quickly learned that only the blue blueberries taste good. We spent a ton of time together sitting in a patch and enjoying all the blueberries that we could get our hands on. He loved wading in the lake and playing in the water, and riding the boat, and listening to the loons.
As always, leaving the island was so hard to do - I'll need to figure out a way to carve out some time to get back in the next couple of weeks so that I don't miss full blueberry season!
